Avignon

A few friends and I went to Avignon back in October.  The weather was nice and since the train ride wasn't so long and the sights interesting but not overwhelmingly numerous, the city made a very nice weekend day trip.  When we arrived we set out for "Le Palais des Papes,"the enormous fortified castle that became the home of the Popes in 1309 when Clement V moved there to escape post-election turmoil in Rome.  "Le Palais" stayed in use for just under a century, expanding in size and grandeur throughout the rule of six popes and two "antipopes," French archbishops who refused to give up power even after the head of the church was reclaimed by the Vatican in what became known as the Papal Schism.  After lunch we paid a visit to the famous "Pont d'Avignon" where of course we danced.  A trip to the Musée du Petit Palais to see medieval religious paintings made a nice end to the day.
